My Second Sunshine Blogger Award!

Many thanks to Eva-Joy for bestowing upon me my second Sunshine Blogger Award! I’ve always found these are a lovely way to show appreciation in the blogging world…and a great way to update one’s blog when one’s schedule resembles a juggling act ๐Ÿ˜‰ย ย

I just need to make a few housekeeping notes before delving into Eva-Joy’s questions…

  1. To any new readers who stumbled upon this blog after my semi-viral tweet this past weekend (heehee),ย HELLO!ย Please feel free to visit my About page, browse my ever-growing selection of movie, book, television, and music reviews, and converse in the comments section. You are most welcome here!
  2. The October edition ofย The Wordsmitheryย goes out to all subscribers THIS coming Wednesday! The Wordsmitheryย is my monthly newsletter, full of recommended articles, inspiring quotes, mini-reviews, and liturgical resources–and you still have 48 hours to sign up for October’s package!
  3. I won’t have an update next Monday (the 12th)…because I’m sharingย twoย articlesย later that week for Eva-Joy and Katie Hanna’sย Everything Star Wars Blogathon! One article will be about theย soundtracks, while the other will be a more scholarly treatise on how the story of Rey and Ben Solo parallels certain pieces of classical literature.ย
  4. After the Blogathon I’m also taking two weeks off. I’ll be working the early voting polls in my area for ten days and won’t have the opportunity to blog–but I’ll be back the first Monday of November with something beautiful to counteract the madness of the election,ย I promise.

And that’s it! Without further ado, here is the Sunshine Blogger Award Tag!

THE RULES:

1. Thank the blogger who nominated you in the blog post and link back to their blog. (Done.)
2. Answer the 11 questions the blogger asked you.
3. Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions.
4. List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.ย

Whatโ€™s the latest youโ€™ve ever stayed up?ย Earlier this year while struggling with insomnia, I tossed and turned one nightย till at least 1 AM. I’m pretty sure I stayed up a little later than that, though. So glad I’m not suffering from that anymore!ย

Are you right- or left-handed?ย Right-handed!

Whatโ€™s the best movie youโ€™ve watched this year?ย Well, I haven’t seen too many new movies since all the theaters have been closed. But if I had to pick one movie out of all the ones I’ve watched (or re-watched) in 2020, the most impactful, well-crafted, and meaningful one would probablyย beย A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhoodwith Patersonย andย Little Womenย right on its heels. ย

Whatโ€™s the best book youโ€™ve read this year?ย This is much easier to answer, haha. Circeย by Madeline Miller is the best book I’ve read this year (so far). I practically inhaled itย this past spring, and I’mย stillย thinking about it.

Do you prefer Christmas or your birthday?ย Oh, Christmas, without question. Birthdays are fun, but I still don’t know what to do or say or beย whenever people sing “Happy Birthday” to me. Christmas, on the other hand, is sacred and beautiful and joyous. The foodstuffs aren’t too bad, either ๐Ÿ˜‰ย

Do you keep a journal or a diary?ย I keep a prayer/devotional journal, but not an actual diary.

Neutrals or pastels?ย Neutrals. You can mix and match more easily.ย

Whatโ€™s your favorite letter of the alphabet?ย I love this question, haha. It would have to be “E” for me. I love names that begin with “E.”

Whatโ€™s your favorite life hack?ย If you’re out of baking powder (and we cannot find baking powder to save our lives right now), just do this: for every 1 teaspoon of baking powder you need, use 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar, and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. The results will be ever-so-slightly different, but it doesย work.ย

What was the last thing you bought?ย A candlestick holder!ย

Whatโ€™s your middle name?ย I actually don’t have a middle name! It was once a source of great woe: there’s nothing like the collective horror of middle-schoolers when, after swapping all their awesome middle names, they find outย youย are the only one with a single name. BUT in my old age I have come to love my name. After all, I basically share it withย the Virgin Mary and her cousin Elizabeth. How could I ever complain about that?

MY QUESTIONS:

  1. If you could fight a sea serpent with one favorite fictional character, which would it be?
  2. What is your favorite Disney movie?
  3. Do you prefer poetry or prose? (Bonus: which do you preferย writing?)
  4. Do you prefer Greek, Roman, Celtic, Norse, Chinese, or some other type of mythology?
  5. What are your thoughts on spaghetti?
  6. Favorite song at this moment in time?
  7. What is the best thing that’s happened to you so far in 2020? (#2020Positivity, y’all)
  8. Do you collect anything?
  9. Les Miserablesย orย The Phantom of the Opera?ย (This is likeย Star Warsย vs.ย Star Trekย for me, haha.)ย
  10. Best painter of all time, in your humble opinion?
  11. Which three fictional characters do you relate to the most?

AWARDEES:

Here’s what I’m gonna do: because many of my frequent commenters don’t have blogs (but have been pockets of sunshine on thisย blogย all the same), I’m going to open these questions to ALL of you! Just answer them in the comments section and have fun!ย OR, if you doย have a blog and want to use these questions as a jump-start for a new post, feel free to do that, too.

I eagerly await your responses ๐Ÿ™‚ย

Lovely answers! And you like names that begin with the letter ‘E’? How fortuitous for me. ๐Ÿ˜€

Your questions are so fun that I’m going to answer them right here!

If you could fight a sea serpent with one favorite fictional character, which would it be?

Tony Stark. *smirks* We’ve got this in the bag. Or rather HE does because I’d be next to useless.

What is your favorite Disney movie?

My favorite Disney PRINCESS movie is Tangled, forever and ever. My favorite Disney movie in general is Meet the Robinsons. Or Robin Hood. It’s soooo tough to pick.

Do you prefer poetry or prose? (Bonus: which do you prefer writing?)

    Prose and prose.

Do you prefer Greek, Roman, Celtic, Norse, Chinese, or some other type of mythology?

Greek, all the way. It’s probably the most familiar to me, for one (thanks, Rick Riordan and Disney Hercules and Troy: Fall of a City). And I love the ancient Greek aesthetic.

What are your thoughts on spaghetti?

I think I’ve had it so much that it’s ‘meh’ to me now. I pretty much only really love it if I make my own sauce and the meat is yummy sausage from Costco instead of boring old ground beef. *nods* Then it’s tip-top, if I do say so myself.

Favorite song at this moment in time?

There’s this Ron Hamilton song called ‘Higher Ground’ that I really, really love right now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4UkL8qcoRQ

What is the best thing thatโ€™s happened to you so far in 2020? (#2020Positivity, yโ€™all)

Hmmm…well, financially and physically, it’s getting a job at a seniors’ home. ๐Ÿ˜€ Good for the pocketbook AND good for losing weight (finally!) because it’s quite intensely physical work. Spiritually, would probably be COVID itself because it shut things down and gave me a chance to focus on God and also led to more ministry opportunities and stuff. (Not to make light of COVID though–I know many people have been seriously and sadly affected by it.)

    Do you collect anything?

Nope, not really. Maybe mugs tho…

Les Miserables or The Phantom of the Opera? (This is like Star Wars vs. Star Trek for me, haha.)

I’ve never seen or read Phantom, so it’ll have to be Les Mis. I’ve grown out of being obsessed with it, but it will forever have a special place in my heart. โค

Best painter of all time, in your humble opinion?

I don't really study painters at all. ๐Ÿ˜›

Which three fictional characters do you relate to the most?

Captain America, Elinor Dashwood, and Felicity (from Road to Avonlea). I wouldn't say they're the ones I relate to the MOST, but they were some who came to mind on short notice. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Congratulations on your job, Eva-Joy! That sounds like a demanding yet very rewarding responsibility.

I have to admit, I’m kinda with you on spaghetti, haha! It’s my siblings’ favorite meal, and I don’t *dislike* it, but to me it’s just a bit “meh” at this point. That’s not even a complaint; it’s just a statement. Spaghetti with sausage rather than ground beef (or ground turkey, in our case) sounds like a really neat twist on a familiar recipe, though!

I am totally gonna do these questions! I love your choices! โค

    1. If you could fight a sea serpent with one favorite fictional character, which would it be? Ronan Lynch from The Raven Cycle, I feel like he could magick up some useful tools for sea-serpent battles. Plus, he's Irish. Sea serpents are in his blood. xD
    2. What is your favorite Disney movie? Lilo & Stitch, always and forever, world without end.
    3. Do you prefer poetry or prose? (Bonus: which do you prefer writing?) Definitely prefer reading and writing prose, though I am very fond of certain poems.
    4. Do you prefer Greek, Roman, Celtic, Norse, Chinese, or some other type of mythology? Celtic!! It makes me feel very Connected to my Ancient Bog-Dwelling Witchy Soul, dontcha know.
    5. What are your thoughts on spaghetti? Yummy. Definitely yummy.
    6. Favorite song at this moment in time? Haha!! Love how you specified "at this moment in time"! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Maaaaaaaaaaybe "Epiphany" by Taylor Swift, I find it expresses many of my Deepest Feelings this year.
    7. What is the best thing thatโ€™s happened to you so far in 2020? (#2020Positivity, yโ€™all) I'm getting published for the first time! โค
    8. Do you collect anything? Not … really?
    9. Les Miserables or The Phantom of the Opera? (This is like Star Wars vs. Star Trek for me, haha.) Les Miserables all the way. I am not a Phantom fan.
    10. Best painter of all time, in your humble opinion? I'll say Vincent van Gogh because I am a loyal Whovian.
    11. Which three fictional characters do you relate to the most? Ooooh. This is a hard 'un. Let's say Cath Avery from Fangirl, Scout Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird, and Carol Danvers from Captain Marvel.

Well, it’s only taken me two days to reply to your comment, Katie Hanna–SO SORRY ๐Ÿ˜› I have developed quite a love for Celtic mythology this year as well! And “Epiphany” is such a good song–it’s one of the few songs that have ever made me tear up.

I really need to read The Raven Cycle. I’ve heard so many good things about it!

This is a lovely blog post, love your answers! Thank-you for sharing that baking hack – it’s a great idea.
If you could fight a sea serpent with one favorite fictional character, which would it be? I’m going to have to go with Wesley/The Dread Pirate Roberts. He is clever, quick on his feet, and good at pretty much everything. Also, it seems very likely that he would have already faced off with a sea serpent on his journeys.
What is your favorite Disney movie? Saving Mr. Banks, hey it is Disney! Or if that is technically cheating, I would say Tangled or the live action Cinderella.
Do you prefer poetry or prose? (Bonus: which do you prefer writing?) Hmm, prose. I do enjoy poetry, but prose is my favourite. Same for writing – I can’t write poetry to save my life.
Do you prefer Greek, Roman, Celtic, Norse, Chinese, or some other type of mythology? I’m not really into mythology.
What are your thoughts on spaghetti? Spaghetti is wonderful, versatile, and one of the most fun foods to make homemade.
Favorite song at this moment in time? ‘Ready Now’ by Dodie.
What is the best thing thatโ€™s happened to you so far in 2020? (#2020Positivity, yโ€™all) Travelling, moving, and seeing a lot of new places! I know, it is a strange year to be doing these thing.
Do you collect anything? Just memories.
Les Miserables or The Phantom of the Opera? (This is like Star Wars vs. Star Trek for me, haha.) I haven’t watched either, but based on the music alone, I would have to go with Les Miserables.
Best painter of all time, in your humble opinion? Ooh, I’m not very educated on painters, so couldn’t pick one… Pascal Campion is one of my favourites – he does digital painting, I love his style. Who is your favourite?
Which three fictional characters do you relate to the most? Via Pullman from Wonder, Margaret Hale from North + South, and Jane Eyre.

hmm, so I did try to comment my answers to your questions when I first read this blog post the day it showed up in my inbox, Maribeth, but WordPress has been kind of glitchy on my laptop lately, so I guess it didn’t go through for some reason.

So I’ll try to do them again now ๐Ÿ˜Š

“If you could fight a sea serpent with one favorite fictional character, which would it be?”
A couple of characters came to mind when I first saw this (including Rey), but I’m going to pick the Fourth Doctor’s former companion, Leela. I’ve been listening to a lot of audio stories with her post-Doctor adventures lately, and she seems like an awesome person to have on your side during a sea serpent battle. She’s a skilled warrior and she’ll never back down in the face of a challenge, especially of an actual physical battle kind, and she’d also know how to patch me up with natural remedies after the fight was over the monster defeated ๐Ÿ˜

“What is your favorite Disney movie?”
Up. Definitely and undoubtedly Up. But I also absolutely love Big Hero 6. (and the Monsters films are great, too!)

“Do you prefer poetry or prose? (Bonus: which do you prefer writing?)”
I’ve been trying to read more poetry lately (and I’ve specifically become a little obsessed with The Ballad of Reading Gaol), but I love poetry too! I think I care for them both equally, though in different ways. (And I do enjoy penning my own poems from time to time, but I’m definitely more confident in my prose-writing abilities.)

“Do you prefer Greek, Roman, Celtic, Norse, Chinese, or some other type of mythology?”
Greek and Roman mythology is highly nostalgic for me, as I went through a VERY intense mythology phase when I was still in elementary school and hungrily tore my way through every collection I could find at the library ๐Ÿ˜‚ But I also really love Norse mythology, and Celtic mythology intrigues me.

“What are your thoughts on spaghetti?”
I honestly think my thoughts on spaghetti could best be summed up as: “ehhh.” ๐Ÿ˜…
It’s alright, and sometimes I do genuinely enjoy a nice hearty plate of it, and I do in general like pasta a lot. But it’s also not on high on my list of all-time favorite dishes. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

“Favorite song at this moment in time?”
Oh goodness this one is HARD!!
You know what, I’ll just pick a handful that I’ve had on repeat lately: I Want To Say I’m Sorry and Don’t You Want to Thank Someone by Andrew Peterson, Homeward Bound by Future of Forestry, along with some selections from musicals and pretty much all of Jess Ray’s discography.

“What is the best thing thatโ€™s happened to you so far in 2020?”
a few days ago, I would’ve had to say getting a valid learner’s permit AND my own car ๐Ÿ˜
buuuuut another really great thing has happened to me this week, which I can’t really talk about just yet, but it’s a total gift from God and I’m so thankful โ˜บ

    “Do you collect anything?”
Enamel pins!! and also fandom stickers, especially by my favorite fan artist ๐Ÿ˜
I would add fabric, yarn, and books to this list, too, but I think that’s more of an “obsessively hoarding” thing than a “collection” thing.

“Les Miserables or The Phantom of the Opera?”
I feel like I have an easy cheat for this question because I’ve still not seen/listened to Phantom, but I LOVE Les Mis. So I’ll choose it for now.

“Best painter of all time, in your humble opinion?”
Van Gogh. And purely from a “how much I personally enjoy their work and am inspired by them” standpoint. I’m sure from a more academic or technical standpoint others can be argued to be “better” than him, but his paintings and the stories behind them are really special to me and I’ll never grow tired of looking at them.

“Which three fictional characters do you relate to the most?”
Hmmm… I’ll go with Ezra Bridger, Spidey/Peter Parker (specifically Tom Holland’s MCU version), and Jo March. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Huh, that’s strange about your comment. WordPress must be hungry, haha. I never did get your first one, though, so no worries!

Honestly, if I were gonna answer the sea serpent question Rey would’ve been my first choice as well–but only because I actually wrote a scene one time where she and Ben took down a sea serpent XD I love your answer about Leela, though! She sounds like a great character.

Really love your answer about Van Gogh as well. I feel like we often admire artists who may, objectively, not be the *absolute best* in their field–but their work touches a special place in our own individual hearts, and that makes them truly great in our own eyes. Nothing wrong with that!
